The project "Wolfgang Koeppen's Jugend - Cataloguing the Estate, Text Formation Analysis, Digitisation and Edition", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and led by Prof. Dr. Eckhard Schumacher from 2011 to 2015, aimed to clarify fundamental questions about the writer's late work, in particular the creation and publication history of Koeppen's prose text "Jugend". The results of the project were presented in summer 2016.
The project centred on Wolfgang Koeppen's prose volume Jugend (1976), one of the Greifswald-born author's late works. Until the project started, the development of this text, the circumstances of its publication and its significance for Koeppen's oeuvre had been largely unexplored. This primarily concerned more than 1,500 typescript pages with notes, fragments and deviating drafts from the author's estate.
In cooperation with the Trier "Competence Centre for Electronic Cataloging and Publication Processes in the Humanities", a digital "Dossier génétique"was created within the framework of the project, which was released on 23 June 2016, Koeppen's 110th birthday. The "Textgenetische Edition" of "Jugend", edited by Katharina Krüger, Elisabetta Mengaldo and Eckhard Schumacher, was published online by Suhrkamp Verlag. Innovative investigations and visualisation functions made it possible to make "Jugend" readable on screen in a new way for those interested in Koeppen and for research. At the click of a mouse, users can experience the context of the late work and the embedding of Jugend in the previously unpublished estate.
